Subconscious studios

One of the most impressive synthesizer studios in the world must be Cevin Keys Subconscious studios in LA. Not least because Key has managed to produce quite a bit of impressive music there as well, especially the Download and Plateau releases. Here Phil Western, Keys long time musical collaborator, gives a tour of the facilities in 2010:

The following clip shows a much earlier incarnation of Subconscious studios in January of 1995, before it was relocated from Vancouver to LA. The clips feature among others Skinny Puppy and Download member Dwayne R. Goettel, who sadly passed away from a heroin overdose six months later. This clip is probably from the sessions that resulted in Downloads first album "Furnace".



I know I've seen another clip of Cevin Key giving a tour of the studio but can't seem to find it on Youtube at least. If you'r unfamiliar with Keys music and want to try out some of his stuff I would recommend that you start with Download's "Helicopter" and/or Plateau's "Gort Spacebar".

Venetian Snares

En sak alltid förbluffat mig med Aaron Funk är varför han inte valde sitt riktiga namn som artistnamn. Men inget är enkelt med den här mannen. Genialisk eller galen? You be the judge. Men en jävel på ljud är han. När man sett den här "intervjun" förvånas man inte över att han verkar komma bra överens med Cevin Key i Skinny Puppy.

När jag kollade på dokumentären om Skinny Puppys Europaturné 1988 som finns med på live-dvd:n The Greater Wrong of the Right Live kunde jag inte låta bli att tänka på Wayne's World. I det här talk show-klippet från 1987 blir inte direkt den känslan mindre, även om det kanske inte kan skyllas på Key.

Hur bra Skinny Puppys konsert på Tyrol i somras än var (och den var helt lysande) så är det ändå så att jag mest lyssnar på Cevin Keys andra projekt nu för tiden. Key driver tillsammans med Phil Western sedan femton år tillbaka bolaget Subconsious Communications, där han ger ut den mesta musiken nuförtiden. Med Western spelar han i Download och Plateau. Här demonstrerar Western Subconscious-studion. Kommentaren om Alesis Andromeda är skön (en modern analog polysynth som kostade runt 40 000:- då den släpptes för en tio år sedan). "The Andromeda don't get used a lot because ... I don't know ... kind of sounds shitty."
